Response (2015)

Composite Mind: Contemporary Responses to Ryder & Yates, Hatton Gallery, Jan-Mar 2015

‘Response’ is two-screen digital projection using 3D modelling software to recreate some of the most formative and inspired ventures from architects Ryder & Yates’ early career: the trade stands they designed for exhibitions at the London’s Olympia in 1957 and 1959, both commissioned by the British Plaster and Boards Company.  Using 3DsMax we were able to update these fascinating mid-century concepts using 21st century technology and digitally reconstruct models of two of these trade stands, reverse engineering from a handful of archive photographs.

The exhibition of this work at Hatton is particularly relevant, it being where Pasmore and Hamilton (close peers of R&Y) created the pivotal installation 'An Exhibit' (1957).

Response was shown at the Hatton Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne as part of Composite Mind: Contemporary Responses to Ryder & Yates exhibition (10 January - 11 April 2015), which also featured work by artist David Bilbrough.  The exhibition was curated by Hatton to accompany the major exhibitions 'Peter Yates: Paintings, 1938-82' (10 January - 16 May 2015) and 'Victor Pasmore in three dimensions' (6 February - 16 May 2015).

Response was made possible with funding from Arts Council England
